Music at St Mary's

Music is central to life at St Mary's and the musical diary provides every possible opportunity for the girls to hone their performance skills; from the weekly Music Chapels in front of the whole school to the Friday informal recitals given to a handful of friends, and from the four day Fourth Form Music Competition to the larger scale concerts in and out of school.

The department collaborates wth Drama every two or three years, most recently in productions of Les Miserables and Grease.

Over 80% of St Mary’s girls take individual instrumental or singing lessons with specialist peripatetic teachers, and girls are regularly entered for ABRSM and Trinity Guildhall examinations.

There are numerous music groups at St Mary’s offering countless opportunities to girls of different abilities and crossing many musical boundaries. These include the Symphony Orchestra, String Sinfonia, Sinfonietta (Junior Orchestra), Opera Group, Chamber Choir, Senior Choir, Junior Choir and Jazz Band.

In addition, there are many vocal ensembles, trios, quartets and other small ensembles, built around, and often instigated by the girls.

Both the vocal and instrumental ensembles are regularly invited to perform at concerts, festivals, services and charity events across Wiltshire.
