Girls perform at the Pangbourne Piano Festival

Pangbourne Piano FestivalOver the weekend of 4th and 5th March, selected girls represented St Mary’s at the Centenary Piano Festival at Pangbourne College. Around 20 schools in the South and South West took part, providing the participants with an opportunity to play a solo piece on a magnificent Steinway Model D Grand Piano.

A Musical Miscellany in Pewsey

St Johns Pewsham ConcertLast Friday, 24th February, two coach loads of girls from the school’s major musical ensembles travelled to St John’s Church in Pewsey to give a concert for the local community. Our junior Wind Band set the ball rolling with two favourites, Skyfall and Tequila, before the school’s chamber orchestra, the String Sinfonia, entertained the audience with Grieg’s Holberg Suite Prelude and Dvořák’s Humoresque.

Girls enjoy musical workshops in the Royal Festival Hall

Royal Festival HallOn 8th February, as part of Enrichment Week, MIV visited the Royal Festival Hall in London's South Bank Centre with the Music Department.  A real highlight of the day for each group was learning to play the gamelan with Dr Sophie Ransby on the beautiful set of Javanese teak and bronze instruments which are housed on the 'Spirit Level' of the Royal Festival Hall.

Outstanding Fourth Form Music Festival Concert

Fourth Form Music Festival The Fourth Form Music Festival was brought to a close with the Celebration Concert on the evening of 30th January.  It followed a week of preliminary rounds, where 77 individual girls were heard, many of whom offered more than one instrument, bringing the total number of pieces performed to over 100.

Uplifting Christmas Carol Service

Carol Service 2016On Sunday 11th December, the Chamber Choir, Junior Consort, LIV Choir and String Sinfonia performed in the Christmas Carol service held at St Mary’s Parish Church in Calne. As is traditional, the service began in darkness with only the Chamber Choir holding candles, and a single voice emerged from the West end of the building, announcing the start of Once in Royal David’s City.

Sir David Willcocks MemorialSt Mary’s Calne was hugely proud to host a memorial concert to celebrate the life and music of Sir David Willcocks CBE, MC at Salisbury Cathedral on Sunday 20th November 2016.  Along with visiting choirs from St Margaret’s Preparatory, Farleigh, Sandroyd and Salisbury Cathedral Schools and musicians from the West of England Youth Orchestra, St Mary’s girls sang and performed many pieces of choral music with particular links to Sir David.
