The school gathered in St Mary’s Church, Calne, for the annual Carol Service on Sunday 9th December; the service began with UV (Year 11), soloist, Belinda, singing the first verse of Once in Royal David’s City in the candle-lit church. String Sinfonia played the Prelude from Saint-Saëns’ Oratorio de Noël and Junior Consort sang John Williams’ Somewhere in my memory, with a soaring cello solo played by UVI Music Scholar, Natasha.
LIV (Year 7) Choir sang the traditional Austrian Carol, Still, still, still, whilst the Chamber Choir had prepared an arrangement of Elizabeth Poston’s Jesus Christ the Apple Tree, the first verse being sung by LV Music Exhibitioner, Elan. Mr Totney opened and closed the service with music by Bach and Duruflé. The Readings were expertly declaimed by Molly (LIV), Phoebe (UIV), Abigail (UV), Rose (LVI), and Head Girl, Hannah, culminating in the 9th lesson, read by the Headmistress, Dr Kirk. Parents enjoyed festive refreshments in Houses after the service.
