Al Gordon and King Charles Visit

On Wednesday 2nd May, the Christian Union hosted a visit from Al Gordon and King Charles. Al Gordon is a worship leader at Holy Trinity Brompton, London and the co-founder of ‘Worship Central’. Charles Costa (‘King Charles’) is an up-and-coming artist who has recently released his debut album ‘Loveblood’. He has already toured with the likes of Mumford and Sons and Noah and the Whale.

Al told us how he became a Christian and interviewed Charles about his relationship with Jesus and how this has affected his music. It was really interesting to find out about the process of exploration and ideas that Charles went through when writing his album. Al’s wife, Olivia, and her friend, both Calne girls, also told us about their experiences of Christianity at school and their testimonies.

With many of us already fans and others more than interested in King Charles’ ‘indie pop rock glam ‘nu’- folk’ music, it was an incredible privilege to be able to walk downstairs and see him perform live in the Sixth Form Common Room for free! He played songs from his album, highlights including ‘Lovelust’, ‘Ivory Road’ and ‘Lady Percy’. The sing-a-long to his version of Billy Joel’s ‘We didn’t start the fire’ (...Kate Moss, Fifty Cent, Obama is the President...) was a great end to the evening.  His witty lyrics, uber-relaxed manner and fantastic guitar playing made the event really enjoyable and something we will remember for a long time to come.
