LVI Form Lecture: Sophie Barker
Serendipity Calling…
On November 1st, Sophie Barker, one of St Mary’s old girls, came to Calne to share her life experiences and perform. Sophie was one of the most down to Earth, friendliest people you could meet and also an amazing songwriter. During her visit she made a presentation about her career, as well as her life at Calne. Sophie joined St Mary’s at the age of 13, oblivious to the world of the creative arts and at that age not knowing her passion for music. Her singing teacher was Miss Caroline Brown and, after joining singing lessons just for fun, she realised how much she connected with music, singing in particular. Sophie also spoke to us about her eventful career especially in the last 10 years. From working as one of the main vocalists on Zero 7’s ‘Simple Things’, to her work in Africa and recording The Rainbow Collection, and finally the release of her own solo album ‘Seagull’.
It was fascinating to hear her speak of how she finds inspiration for her song writing. She gathered ideas through her own reflections on how the world was changing but, more importantly, on how she fitted within the world. In 2007/2008, after trying to find new producers and different bands, she finally came across Ho Hum Records, which appealed to her straight away and she recorded her album with them. Through music Sophie conveys sincerity and truth which is incredibly rare nowadays within the music industry. Luckily she treated us to 4 songs, including ‘Dream Life’ from her album ‘Earthbound’ and her latest single ‘Say Goodbye’ from the album ‘Seagull’. Sophie expressed how important it is for us to follow our instincts and always do what is right for ourselves. She taught us a very vital lesson for when performing. Whether acting, singing, dancing, or just making a presentation, it does not matter if you make mistakes. As long as you speak with conviction, you will be heard. Sophie told us to remember to never let the fear of judgement discourage us from reaching our goals; a valuable lesson that we will all remember.
