St Mary’s girls look set to continuing their excellent record of examination results again this year. Over the last decade, the girls have achieved at least 66% A*-A grades and on average 15% of the girls go on to Oxbridge, with the overwhelming majority gaining places at their first choice of university.
The girls have received some fantastic university offers this year. Seven girls hold Oxbridge offers – looking to study a range of subjects including Chemistry, Classics, French and Spanish, PPE, and three girls to study History at Oxford.
80% of the girls hold 3 or more offers from Russell Group Universities including Birmingham, Bristol, Durham, Edinburgh, Exeter, Leeds, LSE, Manchester, Newcastle, Reading, St Andrews, UCL, Warwick and York. Of these, 35% are intending to study STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) subjects at university - including Aerospace Engineering, Biochemistry with Molecular Biology & Biotechnology, Biological Sciences, Biomedical Sciences, Chemistry, Health and Human Sciences, History & Philosophy of Science, Mathematics, Mathematics with Economics, Mechanical Engineering and Medical Sciences. This is particularly pleasing to see in a field which has been traditionally male-dominated and where there is a dearth of women in STEM professions (only 13% of the STEM workforce is currently made up of women and a recent report by the Institute of Physics showed that in 2011 almost half the schools in England sent no girls on to study A Level Physics in 2011).
The girls at St Mary’s are actively engaged in all of the STEM subjects; some of the girls participate in the Engineering Education Scheme (EES) and, in June 2015, the UV Form and Sixth Form Scientists are looking forward to taking part in a Science Expedition to Montserrat (run in conjunction with the Government of Montserrat and the RSPB) where they will be studying the effects of the volcanic eruptions on the ecosystem.
We would like to wish all of the girls taking their examinations this summer the best of luck!
