There are some school events that feel special the moment they begin, and last week’s Fourth Form Music Festival Concert Final was one of these. With the return of our former brass teacher Allen Cheshire as adjudicator, the chapel was buzzing with excitement and anticipation. The evening was rich in variety and talent. From pop and musical theatre to classical treasures, the programme showcased the full spectrum of the girls’ musical interests.
The evening opened with the Novizia class (beginners to Grade 2). Each performer offered something unique and special, their bravery and thoughtful preparation began the whole event with a joyful sense of occasion. Elsa W began the concert brilliantly on drum kit with a vibrant performance of Uptown Funk, instantly getting the audience clapping along. Chrissy W a very promising pianist followed with her confident performance of Fireworks Minuet. Violinist Siobhan B took us on her own musical ascent with Climb Every Mountain and Sophia T rounded off the class with well-articulated flute playing in Tiptoe and Tango.
The Apprendista class (Grades 3–4) offered a glimpse of blossoming confidence. The girls all performed with a refinement and musical maturity that was remarkable for pupils still relatively early on in their musical journey. Pianist Lily Z played a Waltz with conviction and character, and Charlotte R charmed the audience with her expressive rendition of The Sound of Music. Michelle P offered a thoughtful, calming interpretation of her chosen piece whilst Leyna G. delivered a Baroque aria with clarity and poise. Liliana R closed the class with an impressively assured performance of Flowers on bass guitar.
The Maestro class (Grades 5–6), showcased technical skill and musical intensity. These were performances full of personality and accomplishment. Susan L opened with a lively and characterful Tarantelle on piano. Octavia S P captivated the room with her engaging performance of I Could’ve Danced All Night and Miya W’s piano performance of Andante Grazioso brought sensitivity. Sophie X dazzled with the well-known Hungarian Dance, impressively playing this showy piece from memory. Teyla B moved the audience with her musicality, singing and accompanying herself in a heartfelt rendition of Hallelujah. Easton C concluded the class with a stylish and precise Bach Invention.
The Virtuoso class (Grade 7 and above) brought the evening to its artistic peak. It featured three pianists and a singer, each delivering performances of remarkable talent and maturity. Jinxi L offered an elegant Mozart Sonata, her technique and musicality coming across in abundance. Kate T produced a vivid sound world with Silver Clouds Chasing the Moon; this was a polished and sophisticated performance from memory. Matilda J created a peaceful atmosphere which showcased her vocal control in the challenging A Bay in Anglesey. Elsa W, who opened the evening, returned to close it with a sparkling, memory perfect performance of Jingo on piano.
As Mr Cheshire deliberated, three former finalists returned to the festival. Clarinettist Georgia A (2025 winner), singer Jemima J (2023 winner), and pianist Myra L. all gave stunning performances. It was a joy to witness how these young musicians have continued to flourish.
Mr Cheshire praised the finalists for their preparation, polish, and musical accomplishment, noting how difficult it was to choose between such strong performances. Elsa W, Liliana R, Teyla B, and Kate T each won their categories, with Kate T receiving the 2026 Festival Trophy.
It was an evening of inspirational musicianship at every level that celebrated not just talent, but bravery, hard work, and the sheer joy of sharing music.
