On Wednesday 10 June, LV drama students went to the Bristol Old Vic to see a production of An Ideal Husband. Oscar Wilde’s 19th century comedy had been cleverly adapted to a modern audience, transforming a play we initially expected to feel distant into an audience full of laughter. At first, we assumed the humour wouldn’t resonate with us, given it was written in the 1800s, but this adaption quickly proved us wrong.
With references to Beyonce, subtle innuendos, upbeat music and vibrant costumes, the play captured all our intrigue. Despite earlier wariness, we were completely drawn into a hilarious play filled with secrets, scandals and lots of humour. Even before the show began, the atmosphere was buzzing with excitement. The play involves Mrs Chevely blackmailing Sir Robert, threatening to reveal a political scandal Sir Robert committed early in his career. It is then revealed to Sir Robert’s wife who then faces internal confliction with her relationship and a moral dilemma.
The intricate storyline following blackmail and romance was entertaining and left us wanting to watch more. It was an unforgettable experience. Jamael Westman (who played Lord Goring) stood out in particular with his charisma and comedic timing. We can say most of our laughs were drawn from him. His performance was excellent along with the other many fabulous actors who made the play really come to life.
Overall, we thoroughly enjoyed this trip and are excited for theatre visits in the future.
