Our LV and UV Classical Civilisation students enjoyed an inspiring and enriching visit to the British Museum (24 /2/26), where they were able to see first hand many of the artefacts they have been studying in lessons. Viewing these objects in person brought their understanding of the ancient world vividly to life. Highlights included the Parthenon frieze, with its significant ‘folding of the peplos’ scene; the dramatic Bassae frieze depicting the battle between the Greeks and the Amazons; and the renowned Achilles and Penthesilea vase, capturing the moment Achilles falls in love with Penthesilea at the instant he kills her.

The visit also offered valuable opportunities for the girls to develop their analytical skills. They worked thoughtfully in small groups, making detailed notes, sketching key features, and discussing how the artefacts reflect the cultural, religious, and social values of ancient Greece and Rome.

Overall, it was a highly successful and rewarding visit. The girls have returned energised and motivated, with a stronger sense of connection to their studies and a clearer understanding of the material they will be drawing upon in their GCSE examinations.
