The annual Vocal Prize Night is a highlight of the school’s musical life, always showcasing an outstanding array of vocal talent. The event features finalists from the Sir Bryn Terfel Song Prize and the Sir Tim Rice Musical Theatre Prize, who perform their chosen repertoire for adjudication as they compete for these prestigious awards.

This year’s adjudicator, the renowned Welsh pianist and accompanist Dr Iwan Llewelyn Jones, was impressed by exceptionally high standard of singing and also by the finalists’ ability to convey storytelling of the highest calibre.

The concert showcased ten of our senior singers presenting music from across the ages, celebrating the rich and expressive medium of song.

The celebratory concert captivated pupils, families, staff and members of the wider community. Chapel proved the perfect venue for the evening, and the audience’s enthusiastic and supportive appreciation of each singer made the event truly special.

The Sir Bryn Terfel Song Prize featured performances from Guinevere W (Upper Sixth), Jina N (Lower Sixth), Delphina P (LV), Jemima J (LV) and Grace M (Lower Sixth), all of whom presented their repertoire with poise and beauty of tone.

The Sir Tim Rice Musical Theatre Prize followed, with Hermione B (Lower Sixth), Maddy A (Lower Sixth), Katie H (LV), Georgie C (UV) and Georgina F (Upper Sixth) stepping confidently into dramatic scenarios with flair and emotional depth.

The singers were superbly accompanied on piano by Mr Mark Sandon-Williams, Mrs Rachel Allard and Mrs Dudley Fryar.

Dr Iwan Llewelyn Jones delivered the final adjudication, offering warm praise to every finalist. The 2026 Sir Bryn Terfel Song Prize was awarded to Jemima J, with Delphina P named Runner-Up. The 2026 Sir Tim Rice Musical Theatre Prize was won by Maddy A, with Georgie C as Runner-Up, while Katie H received a Highly Commended accolade.

Reflecting on her experience, Maddy A said: ‘The support from my friends and fellow competitors really helped me to feel calm and less nervous. Everyone was amazing, and I am so grateful to have sung alongside so many talented musicians.’

Jemima J added: ‘Since joining St Mary’s, I have been inspired by many senior musical role models – specifically by their performances at the annual Vocal Prize Night. I was excited to finally have an opportunity to perform and share my music at this fantastic event!’

The evening was a wonderful celebration of the continued strength of singing at the school, and the endorsement of such distinguished figures as Sir Bryn Terfel and Sir Tim Rice truly was the icing on the cake.
