The Debating Society has had two historically-linked debates over the last couple of weeks. Last week, the focus was on which time period would you like to visit for a while?
The options varied from:
-1960’s London Fashion houses
-Parisian Cafés for discussions with Simone de Beauvoir
-Pre-Mozart Europe to sell off classical pieces and make our fortune
-the Jurassic period for some peace and quiet
-1989 and the fall of the Berlin wall
-going on a Viking raid.

This week, we held a more traditional style debate which has a for and against side to the question:
‘Who would win between five fully-armed modern US soldiers and an entire medieval army?’
As a military Historian, I was delighted that we really pulled the debate apart, considering the nuances of the types of armies, weapons, tactics and so on that needed to be considered. On voting, most people concluded that the sheer numbers involved in the medieval army would make them more likely to win, though it was not a unanimous decision.
