This year’s British Science Week was marked by an engaging and varied programme of activities that brought creativity, curiosity and a strong sense of community to our school.

The celebrations began the Friday prior with our popular ‘Guess the Element’ staff dress up day, which saw teachers arriving in an impressive array of scientifically themed costumes. From imaginative interpretations of noble gases to meticulously crafted metals and minerals, the day sparked lively conversation and set a cheerful tone for the week ahead.

Monday launched our hands-on ‘Engineering Challenge’, where students worked collaboratively to design and construct innovative solutions to set problems. The atmosphere was one of focus, teamwork and inventive thinking, with students demonstrating impressive resilience as they refined and tested their designs.

On Tuesday evening, our Sixth Form students enjoyed a inaugural Science Dinner, an opportunity to celebrate their achievements, with a science ‘pub quiz’, and enjoy an elegant evening in the company of peers and staff. The event highlighted the enthusiasm and ambition of our senior scientists and provided a fitting midpoint to the week’s activities.

Wednesday marked the academic highlight of the programme with our British Science Week Lecture, delivered by Dr Jessamy Hibberd. Her thought-provoking talk inspired rich discussion among students. We are grateful to Dr Hibberd for sharing her expertise and contributing so meaningfully to the week’s celebrations.

Throughout the week, one particularly popular feature was our live streamed chick hatching, which offered students a real time window into the early stages of life. This ongoing display drew much interest and many delighted visits as pupils checked daily on the progress of the hatchlings.

Complementing this were our ‘Mystery Microscope’ competition, which challenged students to identify unusual samples from magnified images, and a series of curiosity themed Fourth Form science lessons, designed to encourage questioning, exploration and scientific thinking.

British Science Week highlighted the vibrancy of science within our school community. The diverse programme of events showcased the spirit of inquiry that defines our students and provided opportunities for learning, creativity and connection.

We look forward to building on this success as we continue to foster a passion for science in all its forms.
