A packed house of friends, parents and staff were treated to a devilish tale from Weimar-era Germany. Lulu, written by Frank Wedekind, was controversial then and revived ever since, for its tale of a showgirl anti-heroine and her machinations and her manipulations – as she works her way through husbands to wealth and fame – continues to fascinate.
Ada R, in the title role was by turns teasing and venomous, and in a superb ensemble, Martha C was ferocious and brooding as her Svengali and lover, Matilda R sparkling as his perky choreographer son, Poppy R convincingly creepy as her disreputable ‘father’ and others, Georgie F also multi-roling in a series of comic tour de forces, and Amelia T heart-wrenching as her doomed poet lover and a lascivious schoolboy.
I’ve directed a lot of examination pieces in my time, and to be honest, this cast and this play created something right at the very summit. A sinful treat!
