Girls head off to Berkshire for Piano Festival

On the weekend of 9th March, St Mary’s was one of a number of schools from across the South of England to participate in a Piano Festival at Pangbourne College. Fourteen girls from right across the age range took part, providing them with a wonderful opportunity to play on a Steinway Model D grand piano.

Each pupil performed a solo piece before being given a short coaching session by the adjudicators, Pamela Chilvers and Luis Parés. Right the way through the range of ages and abilities, everyone was able to take something away to think about for a future occasion, and the experience of a public performance in a workshop-style setting did them the world of good ahead of exams for many of them this week. Congratulations to all 14 girls on their excellent efforts, and particularly to Yu Ying (Year 12), who won a runner-up prize for her excellent extract from Children’s Corner by Debussy.
