On the evening of Wednesday 6th November, the Music Scholars came together for their annual gathering, which this year took place in Top Hall. The evening began with solos from two of our UIV Scholars, Deborah and Izzy. Deborah opened with a lovely rendition of Bach’s aria Bist du bei mir, before Izzy gave an atmospheric performance of the opening movement from Beethoven’s Moonlight Sonata.

A sumptuous meal then followed, before the girls were treated to some words of wisdom from this year’s guest speaker, Mrs Penny Price Jones, who was once a singing teacher here at St Mary’s and a former Chair of AOTOS (the Association of Teachers of Singing). She emphasised the value of the human voice, along with the importance of keeping live performance going for generations to come in an increasingly digital age.

After an enriching evening, everyone left with a renewed sense of opportunity and responsibility. Thanks are due to Mrs Thomas and her staff for the delicious food, as well as to the indefatigable Mrs Black for her ever-meticulous administrative skills.
