LVI Form Careers Conference: Inspiring Women

Our day started with a quick warm-up session, courtesy of Mr Jones, where we were given our itineraries and prepped for the exciting day ahead.

Our first activity was a panel all about The World of Work. Every member of the panel gave us a brief introduction of themselves and their careers so far; with careers ranging from interior design and law to neuroscience, every area imaginable was represented by top women who all provided very different stories of how they proceeded after university.

We then split up to have short seminars which focused on different types of jobs. We all gained some insightful advice and learnt much more about the process of switching careers.

After a delicious lunch, where we had another opportunity to talk to our guests, we headed back to the Theatre where the LVI Young Enterprise Company team, 'Zest', gave us a presentation about their child-friendly interactive cookbook in preparation for the county stage of the competition. They did an outstanding job with their dynamic and energetic presentation which did the whole team proud. The feedback given by our guests was invaluable and provided them with confidence boosts and constructive criticism, all of which will help their development in reaching their goal. The addition of a new perspective really helped our Young Enterprise team and they look forward to updating us after the real presentation - we wish the Zest team all the best.

Our final panel was focused on Getting into Work and the Work-Life Balance and an introduction to all the graduates not present for the first panel. The necessity of work experience was discussed, both to learn skills for future jobs and to develop life skills.

The day finished with tea where we had a last chance to talk to the speakers with some girls even managing to secure work experience for this summer.

Overall, it was a fantastic day and we learnt a great deal from it. We were all struck by the diligence and perseverance of these women in the world of work who definitely lived up to the day’s title of ‘Inspiring Women’. We would like to thank the Catering Staff for a lovely lunch as well as Mr Jones and Mrs Mastin-Lee for organising such a brilliant day.
