Girls play for England at the Lacrosse World Cup Festival

While the World’s top senior international players represented their nation at the Lacrosse World Cup, 23 St Mary’s players enjoyed playing in a Festival which ran alongside the World Cup in Guildford in July. Four of last year's 1st XII represented England in the U19 age group; Jemima and Iona (UVI leavers) played for England B and Caroline and Amelia (moving from UV to LVI) played for England C. The standard of play was extremely high, with competition varying from top school teams to American select teams, Japanese club teams as well as a few other National teams.

U19
"On Sunday 16th July, Caroline and Amelia met the rest of the U19 England squad at Surrey Sports Park in Guildford for the start of the 2017 Lacrosse World Cup Festival. Some of us had already enjoyed watching the senior England team play the Americans the day before, but the squad was now altogether to watch and cheer on our seniors against Australia – which they sadly lost (only to beat them on golden goal in the Bronze Medal game). We then travelled to Charterhouse School which was our accommodation for the week. As well as a motivating team talk from our Head Coach Nicky Budd, we were all excited to be given our England kit! The U19 squad was split into three teams; the Lions, Roses and the Oaks. Former UVI girls, Iona and Jemima, played in the Roses team and Caroline and Amelia played in the Oaks. We were scheduled to play several matches each day of the week, with our rest day full of team building activities, such as raft building. We were very lucky to play some intense matches against some highly experienced American teams, as well as playing countries such as Germany, Wales and Japan – which was the most unusual from a language perspective. Our team coach worked closely with us and varied our positions from time to time, this gave us fantastic match-play experience – and we were both happy to get on the score sheet several times.

To end our week, the whole U19 squad came together once again to support the seniors in an amazing, intense and unforgettable Bronze Medal match, against Australia. In torrential rain we watched possibly the most exciting match we have ever seen, which ended in a nail-biting overtime where England clinched the Golden goal and the Bronze Medal.

We were extremely honoured and proud to play for England in such an amazing week of lacrosse."
Amelia (current LVI Form)

U16
Meanwhile in the U16 section, we entered a St Mary’s school team from UIV to LVI Form. We had a great week of competitive matches, finishing as top of the British sides and loving the challenge of two very good elite American clubs and the Israel National Team (who were all American!). Between our matches we were inspired and entertained by the World Cup players, watching all the quarter finals and semi-finals throughout the week.
