St Mary’s Success in Round One of the English Speaking Union Mace debate

DebatingOn Wednesday 20th November, St Mary’s hosted three other schools for the first round of the English Speaking Union Mace debate, a national competition with several local and regional heats before the Nationals which take place in March next year.

Lucy has work selected for the RBA Star Students Exhibition

Lucy in Art WorkshopMany congratulations to Lucy (2019 Leaver), who has had her artwork selected (from over 200 works) for the Royal Society of British Artists (RBA) Star Students Exhibition. Lucy's oil on canvas, Conventional, will be displayed at both The Royal Over-Seas League (ROSL) and Mall Galleries, London. 

Inspiring London Hub Dot Event

CGA reunions Hub Dot Event On Thursday 14th November, approximately 65 alumnae, interspersed with a few parents and 21 girls from the Sixth Form, gathered at the Anthropologie store in Chelsea for an evening of inspiration and storytelling, courtesy of the Calne Girls' Association and Hub Dot. 

Young Enterprise team launch 'Note to Self' Book

young enterpriseThis year, Calne’s Young Enterprise team has written a book, Note to Self. Their company, Perspective, aims to help other young people who are struggling with the same issues that they’ve come across. Essentially, their book Note to Self is what they would want to tell their younger selves – its anecdotes, insights and advice from people who’ve experienced first-hand what they're talking about.

'Fashion Fails' at the Poore Company Supper

Poore Company Supper On the evening of 13th November, Poore had their annual Company Supper with the theme ‘Fashion Fails’. The girls enjoyed getting to know their Poore 'Families' better over brownies and ice-cream; this was followed by a session of blind-makeovers, before a disco.

Girls launch new School Charity Initiative

charity chapelOn 14th November, Iona and Jolie, members of the Head Girl's Team leading community and charity-focused activities, presented the school charity for this academic year in Chapel. The Head Girl's Team are keen to support a local initiative and selected Doorway, which is based in Chippenham.

NursesOn Friday 8th November, Tessa Wade gave a Lunchtime Careers Seminar on Nursing. Open to the Fifth and Sixth Form girls, Tessa talked about her own impressive career of 30 years working in various roles in both public and private hospitals in the UK and abroad.

Exploring Mars at 'We the Curious'

We the CuriousAs part of the Donaldson Week programme, MIV (Year 8) were taken on an exciting STEM-focused excursion to ‘We The Curious’ in Bristol to take part in a Mars-themed day. This followed on from their Mars-themed CREST project, completed at the start of the academic year.

Girls conquer the 'Wind Turbine Challenge'

Maths LIV and MIVFor the final day of Donaldson Week, the  LIV and MIV (Year 7 and Year 8) girls took part in a Wind Turbine Challenge. In teams, they had to research Wind Turbines, what they are used for, how effective they are and their advantages and disadvantages.
