With fixtures taking place on the first weekend back at school, the PE Department ran a successful Pre-season Training Programme for students in hockey and lacrosse.
Training started on Friday with students being coached by Jacob from Performance Hockey Coaching, working on a number of new skills and putting these into action in pressured play.
After the hockey session, students were put through their paces in a lacrosse session to get ready for the next day’s tournament.
On Saturday, the SMC team took part in the Bath 8’s Tournament. This is an annual season opener and, as an open tournament, there were schools, universities and clubs all playing against each other. The SMC team, which included recent Alumna Amy Bolton, had a great morning, winning all their games to finish as number one seeds, putting them through to the quarter final against Reigate.
The quarter final match started well, however, the opposition came back into the game at the end of the half. SMC were able to comfortably regain a good lead through great attacking play, especially from the younger members of the team.
We were then through to the semi-final against Wilmslow, last year’s winners, which was a fantastic game. The opposition were competitive and played a tough game with their keeper making some tremendous saves. The final score was 2-1 to Wilmslow, but SMC can be proud of how they played against an older and more experienced team, especially as the team was made up of a range of players from 1st team to U15s.
In all, a very succesful start to the new season!
Mr David Abini, Head of Lacrosse
