This week in Chapel, the new Student Subject Heads of English, Tilly and Tashy (both LVI), launched a new creative writing club, the SMC Writer’s Guild, which will meet every Tuesday in the Lumi Library from 5.15pm to 5:45pm. Open to all years, with everyone welcome, the Writer’s Guild hopes to expand knowledge and skills in creative writing. At the meetings, the Fourth Form will be represented by Theodora (UIV).

As Tilly explained, ‘Outside of the annual Literalily creative writing competition, we want to provide more opportunities to write and discuss stories, which are just as important as reading and analysis. By starting this Guild, we are providing a forum for everyone to come and be able to write creatively alongside others, sharing work and ideas and learning new skills along the way.’

Tashy added, ‘Some of our aims in this Guild include creating and following a calendar of competitions in which you can enter your work, which could range from short stories to critical essays. Additionally, we hope to include a range of fun games which we hope will assist in clearing any writers block as well as inspire all to get writing.

Alongside that we are looking to invite speakers, hopefully including some authors, to come and help expand our knowledge of writing.

We would also like to emphasise that the Guild will be a relaxed setting where it is your choice in what you want to share.’

Head of English, Mrs Lord emphasised: 'We have an incredible pool of writerly talent at St Mary's Calne; the aim is to get more of our work out into the world, more often.'

They ended with the words of Sylvia Plath: ‘and by the way everything in life is writable about if you have the outgoing guts to do it and the imagination to improvise. The worst enemy to creativity is self-doubt.
