Over the past three months, it’s been an absolute dream to work with the UIV cast on my slightly ridiculous version of this Shakespeare classic, A Midsummer's Night Dream, though there have been a few challenges faced along the way!

Firstly, to conquer the language with all it’s rhythms and meanings, then the complex action of this particular fast-paced adaptation which sees the magic and the mischief interwoven in one ever-changing set complete with beautifully adorned bower for the Queen Titania and trees that float around the stage.

The concept of the play 'that goes wrong' kicked off in the beginning as ‘director’ Quince, played by Alice A, wanders onto stage without any idea that the audience have arrived, ready to the see a show! Panic ensues but soon enough they get themselves together and….THEATRE!

This was great fun to play with and led to a lot of conversations about plays within plays within plays. Add to this, themes of love, comedy and magical mayhem!

All the cast did extremely well and the huge fairy ensemble were amazing, adding depth and texture to the show as the action unfolded in front of their eyes.

Once we arrived at the Pound Arts Centre, nerves and excitement kicked in and every single performer upped their game and brought precision and energy to their role, whether it was as a bumbling Mechanical or a naughty Fairy – everyone played their part! Additionally, the backstage crew were phenomenal, doing beautiful and intricate make up for 17 Fairies under the guidance of professional creative, Jamie Carter.

All in all, it was a brilliant experience which was echoed by the parents who came along to watch at 7pm and filled the auditorium with rapturous applause! In the post-show mingling, one delighted parent came forward to ask if we would be doing it again as she could watch it “over and over”.

Well done to all!
