Congratulations to the Lower Sixth Charity Steering Group for planning and leading a highly successful programme of Charity Week events to raise awareness and funds for two very worthy charities – the Sickle Cell Society and Womankind, a Bristol-based mental health charity supporting women.
The week began with a special moment: a volunteer from the Sickle Cell Society joined us via livestream for an informal conversation with the steering group before delivering a short talk in Chapel. This provided the whole school community with meaningful insight into the charity’s vital work.
Throughout the week, pupils enjoyed an array of engaging activities, including popular bake sales and a range of funfair-style games. Among the weekday highlights was the very well-attended ‘Pie the Teacher’ event, which brought great enthusiasm and laughter.
On Friday afternoon, the community came together in glorious sunshine for a vibrant Colour Run, followed by the annual Charity Week Open Mic Night. This much-loved event showcased exceptional performances from pupils across the school, creating an intimate atmosphere where every performer was warmly supported. We were especially honoured to welcome Mr John James, Chief Executive of the Sickle Cell Society, who travelled to join us and address the audience.
In the lead up to Charity Week, specially designed, ethically sourced pyjamas were produced and sold, raising a significant amount even before the week officially began.
Alongside the daily events, an impressive Silent Auction ran throughout the week, offering a wide variety of exciting prizes from unique work experience opportunities to afternoon teas, spa days and theatre outings.
To conclude this term’s programme, we welcomed Danielle from Womankind, who joined Chapel via livestream after meeting with the steering group members. She later wrote:
‘What a wonderful group of young women. I was personally very moved by the support and passion toward supporting mental health in the Chapel today. You have a wonderful steering group – some future champions for women’s mental health, I’m sure.’
The Charity Steering Group has once again been outstanding. Their work represents a steep learning curve and an ambitious undertaking, yet they have exceeded expectations in every respect. The wider school community – pupils, staff and parents – greatly enjoyed the opportunity to take part in such a varied and meaningful programme. We extend our sincere thanks to everyone for their support, generosity and participation.
Together, the Charity Steering Group and the wider school community have made a significant and positive impact.
