This year’s Lower Sixth Charity Steeping Group not only raised much needed money for their chosen charity, Sickle Cell Society, they developed entrepreneurial, project management and creative skills. Maddy shares the innovative approach she and Octavia took in leading this year’s Lower Sixth Charity Steering Group’s fundraising initiative.
‘Over the Autumn Term, as a part of this year’s Charity Week, the Lower Sixth Charity Steering Group came together to decide which item of clothing we would like to sell to support our chosen charity: Sickle Cell Society.
‘In the last few years, the Lower Sixth has been selling trackies, so this year, we decided to sell super comfy and cute pyjama bottoms. After brainstorming the colours and designs, we all came down to a timeless star pattern in the colours of baby pink and sage.
‘This year, Octavia and I were in charge of organising the pjs, and with the help of my family in Thailand, we successfully located a factory in Bangkok that could create the perfect pattern on 100% high quality cotton. By being in charge of organising the production, we both learnt so much about the importance of sizing, as we wanted these pyjamas to be the comfiest ever. As we wanted to keep the product as ethical as possible, these pyjamas were made in a local dress-maker’s shop in Bangkok, and on the drawstring of each pair, the name of the charity was individually stamped by us, so every pair is unique.
‘With the help of Mrs Hatlapa at the school shop, we managed to be very efficient when it came to keeping the orders clear and organised, and ensured each pair landed safely in the hands of everyone who supported Sickle Cell society this year. Thank you to everyone who purchased a pair, we hope you love them just as much as we do.’
Save the Children better off my more than £600 thanks to Calne’s Christmas Jumper Day
Our festive Charity Christmas Jumper Day at the end of last term was a wonderful success.
The day began with everyone gathering in the chapel, where students learned about the incredible work of Save the Children. To bring the Christmas spirit to life, staff and students performed a lively flashmob-style play – a condensed version of Dickens’ A Christmas Carol – including wailing ghosts and Marley’s chains.
The atmosphere was full of cheer, with plenty of creative and eye-catching fancy dress on display. Thanks to the generosity and enthusiasm of our community, we raised an impressive £617 for Save the Children. A huge thank you to everyone who took part and helped make the day so memorable.
