school life

senior school

Senior School, for girls in Years 9 to 11, is a time of discovery, achievement and growing independence centred around our Calne Values of curiosity, compassion and courage. In our all-girls environment, balancing academic rigour with exceptional care, we empower every pupil to develop the confidence and embrace new challenges, preparing them for academic and personal success.

Senior School curriculum

Senior School pupils are challenged and supported in equal measure – encouraged to think independently, explore boldly and build the confidence to embrace new opportunities.

In Year 9, pupils enjoy a broad and balanced curriculum that is dynamic and forward-thinking, while guiding them as they make their GCSE choices. In Years 10 and 11, teachers ensure every pupil is stretched, supported and inspired to achieve more, surpassing expectations, as measured by exceptional value added scores. Alongside academic excellence, enrichment opportunities spark new passions and develop the resilience, adaptability and skills that prepare pupils not only for GCSE success, but for the exciting futures that await them.

Boarding options

Most pupils board full time, joined by day girls who fully embrace school life in our full boarding environment. We have lessons on weekdays and Saturday mornings, sport fixtures on Saturday afternoons and a busy weekend programme.

Except on closed weekends, pupils are allowed to return home on Saturdays after school commitments, but most choose to stay on campus to enjoy more time with their friends, the fantastic range of weekend activities and, as GCSEs get closer, focused study time. (This is particularly welcomed by our artists who have access to our outstanding art studios throughout the weekend.)

Futures Programme

We want every pupil to feel empowered to make purposeful choices about their lives beyond school. Our Futures Programme for pupils in Years 9 to 11 enables each of them to explore career pathways, develop essential skills and make informed decisions about their next steps. Through workshops, careers talks, coaching and practical experiences, pupils gain confidence, resilience and insight, preparing them for GCSEs, further study, vocational routes and future opportunities.

Co-curricular

Empowering students to explore with confidence

Our stimulating and enriching co-curricular programme is central to life at St Mary’s Calne, with around 100 clubs, activities and sports to choose from every year. From drama and art to competitive sports, every pupil is encouraged to explore, create and grow, finding her voice and passion in a supportive and inclusive girls’ first environment.
