The school’s Delscey Burns Theatre was transformed into a glittering ballroom last Friday evening as students and staff came together for a spectacular ‘Strictly Calne Dancing’ event, complete with The St Mary’s All Stars Big Band, ‘Strictly-style’ judging panel, dazzling costumes – all beneath the iconic glitter ball.
Before the competition began, Head Judge Miss Lecamp surprised everyone with a real treat. Accompanied by her contemporary dance group, she presented two beautiful dance pieces that captivated the audience and set a high standard of dance for the evening ahead.
In true ‘strictly’ style, the judging panel foursome were an impressive set, each with their own scoring paddle. Firstly, Head Judge Miss Lecamp, whose expert eye for dance and carefully considered scores kept competitors on their toes. She was joined by a sparkling Miss Collier, who delivered her feedback with enthusiasm and warmth. Meanwhile, Mrs Handy embraced the role of the famously critical Craig Revel Horwood, offering sharp, no-nonsense critiques, and Mr Stoten, who effortlessly channelled the charm and encouragement of Anton du Beke, ensuring every performer left the floor with a smile. Mrs Black was primed and ready to take the scores as the performances began.
Then it was time for the competition, which was marked with an upbeat rendition of the famous, and much-loved, ‘Strictly’ theme.
Each Company presented a quartet dance to a live big band tune, energetically conducted by Miss Wilby and featuring both pupils and our teaching musicians, followed by a large-scale mass dance, choreographed by the pupils themselves, demonstrating impressive teamwork and flair.
Each performance was met with enthusiastic applause before the judges revealed their scores using the iconic paddles, building suspense as the leaderboard shifted throughout the evening. While the judges deliberated the final results, the Sixth Form surprised everyone with a flash mob performance to ‘Shut Up and Dance’, which proved to be brilliant fun and had the entire theatre buzzing.
The event was a resounding success, showcasing the incredible talent within the school and providing an unforgettable night of entertainment for all involved.
Congratulations to Moberly who took home this year’s trophy, with Osmund in 2nd place, Poore, Ed Rich and Grosstete were all equal third place with the same score.
