academic life

year 9 curriculum

Year 9 pupils (known as Upper Four or UIV) engage in a broad, balanced programme of learning aligned with the National Curriculum. The year group usually doubles in size at Year 9 so careful attention is given to welcoming new pupils. It is an exciting year with more choice and independence.

Pupils expand their horizons through choice, independence and growing confidence

Setting pupils up for success

While most subjects are taught in form groups, pupils are set in mathematics, modern languages and Latin to provide tailored support and challenge. Shared assessments ensure fair placement and regular reviews help each pupil grow in confidence and achieve strong academic progress.

Exploring options with confidence

In the Spring Term, girls begin preparing for GCSE choices with guidance from teachers and their personal tutor. They are supported in recognising their strengths, exploring interests and identifying future ambitions. This process ensures decisions feel both exciting and empowering.

We work in partnership with families through a dedicated information evening, conversations with tutors and pupils benefit from tailored one-to-one advice. Together, these steps create clarity and reassurance, allowing each pupil to make informed choices with confidence and purpose.

Expanding horizons and growing independence

Metacognition lessons, subject trips and cross-curricular workshops enrich classroom learning and nurture independence. These experiences encourage curiosity and critical thinking, helping pupils connect ideas across subjects and deepen their engagement with what they study.

As girls mature, they are encouraged to reflect on their learning, collaborate with peers and step into leadership opportunities. This balance of independence and responsibility builds confidence and resilience, preparing them to embrace the challenges ahead.
