Grounds at St Mary’s Calne

From classrooms that spark collaboration to our orchard and beautifully manicured gardens, our wonderful, safe and peaceful campus is loved by all.

Our grounds are beautiful year-round, with wide lawns, landscaped gardens, an apple orchard and outdoor classrooms hosting concerts, lessons and performances. The Lime Kiln Garden is a focal point, offering space for relaxation and reflection – encouraging pupils to enjoy the outdoors every day.

Blending heritage with innovation, historic features sit alongside creative new landscapes. Together, they provide the backdrop for friendships, exploration and growth, strengthening our community and enriching daily life at St Mary’s Calne.

Boarding Houses

Each of our six boarding houses are purpose-built and carefully designed for each stage of school life. Comfortable bedrooms, welcoming common rooms, study areas and kitchens create a balance of independence and care, while landscaped gardens provide room to relax in nature.

Progression from Lower School through Senior School to Sixth Form is reflected in our boarding houses. Younger pupils share bright dormitories and common rooms, while older girls gain independence with single bedrooms and dedicated study areas from Year 10. Sixth Form students enjoy university-style ensuite rooms, preparing them for life beyond school.

Campus and facilities

Lumi Library

Located at the heart of the campus, our award-winning library offers natural light, orchard views and outstanding resources, more in common with a modern university library.

Spanning two floors, the library houses more than 14,000 books, interactive teaching zones, project rooms, a multimedia suite and, at its centre, a mini amphitheatre hosting talks, clubs and presentations.

The Lime Kiln Garden

Opened in 2021, our Lime Kiln Garden combines heritage materials with thoughtful planting to create a welcoming setting for reflection, learning and creativity.

Designed by leading landscape architect Sally Harley-Martin, the Lime Kiln Garden was created to encourage pupils, staff, families and visitors to enjoy the school’s wonderful outside space all year round. Framed by yew hedging and overlooked by the Grade II Listed Lime Kiln, the garden has study areas, swings, a sunken stone garden, sculptures and water features. It is a cherished place in the heart of the school.
