The virtual world has opened up lots of opportunities for many of us, not least the ability to hold Debates online between students in different cities- indeed, in different countries! It also means that it can slot nicely into the school lunch times of both schools without travel time or missing lessons.
Monday 28th June saw our second friendly against Godolphin Latymer school in which we debated the motion:
'This house believes monuments to controversial historical figures should remain.'
St Mary’s were the proposition side, with Godolphin Latymer taking the opposition. The variety of debates were excellent ranging from discussions on the moral and practical implications, alternatives to removal and the very subjective nature of the concept ‘controversial’. After a hard fought debate, St Mary’s two teams got 2nd and 3rd place for the excellent speeches and rebuttal.
