We are delighted to announce that, as a result of Vicky’s (UV Form) incredible performance in the UK Maths Challenges and Olympiads this year, she has been invited to the UK Mathematics Trust Olympiad Initial Training Camp at Queen’s College, Oxford, from Sunday 27th August to Saturday 2nd September.
Creatively talented students and staff gathered together for our Annual Golden Lily celebrations on the evening of Tuesday 21st March, with a Drinks Reception, Dinner and the Presentation of Awards
On Thursday 16th March, all the LVI travelled to London to attend a UCAS day at Brunel University.
The Armed Forces Fund was very fortunate to be chosen as one of four charities to be supported at the world premiere of Another Mother’s Son, held at the Odeon Cinema, Leicester Square on Thursday 16th March.
These workshops ran throughout National Science Week during lunch times; the students learnt how pioneers of the 19th century tackled capturing an image without the use of a camera, by using techniques such as Cyanotype.
On the evening of 16th March, as part of our Science Week activities, ten keen bakers from all five Companies lined up in the Sixth Form house kitchens to begin the Biology Bake Off Challenge!
British Science Week is the annual national celebration of all things scientific and celebrate we certainly did. Walking into chapel on Monday morning, the girls were greeted by music from two of their Physics teachers, Mrs Kingsland and Miss Vega.
On the evening of 15th March, eleven lucky students were able to meet with three members of staff from Dyson to discuss engineering, design, and the involvement of women in the scientific community.
As part of British Science Week, on Tuesday 14th March, we were joined in the chapel by 140 Year 5 and 6 children from the Calne area - Fynamore Primary, Hilmarton Primary and St Margaret’s - as well as a good number of St Mary’s pupils from LIV through to UVI, for our second annual primary school lecture, A Taste of Chemistry.
On the evening of 14th March, an expert on astronomy (Paul Hill, ESA Astronomer) came to visit us.
As part of British Science Week, a group of Sixth Form Biologists and Psychologists took part in the much anticipated Brain Day, run by Dr Guy Sutton, who is the Director and Founder of Medical Biology Interactive and an Honorary Consultant Assistant Professor at the University of Nottingham Medical School. He evidently has a vast understanding in and a contagious enthusiasm for neuroscience and we all really appreciated his ability to simplify complex concepts.
On the evening of Monday 13th March, as part of our full week of activities in celebration of British Science Week, we were delighted to welcome Professor Alice Roberts, who came to the school to talk to the girls on The Human Journey.
