Higgs Hunter projectThis week, St Mary’s Sixth Form Physics students were delighted to welcome Professor Alan Barr from Merton College, Oxford University. We are very excited to be part of the Higgs Hunters project which will see us analysing data from the ATLAS experiment at CERN which discovered the Higgs particle in 2012.

Professor Barr came in to lend a hand with the project set up and help us prepare for the launch in January. He is a particle physicist who works at Oxford and collaborates with CERN on the ATLAS project. He very kindly agreed to stay and speak with our LVI physicists about everything particle physics related. Our girls were able to ask him questions ranging from the, as yet unanswered, problem of why there appears to be more matter than antimatter in the Universe to pentaquark particles.
