On the evening of 24th September, three UVI (Year 13) Latin students tuned into a lecture by Professor Matthew Leigh of St Anne's College, Oxford, on Amores 2.
The triple challenges of COVID-19, appalling weather, and horses with lots of character, did not stop four of the UVI (Year 13) girls - Lily, Abbie, Flo and Ellie - passing their Gold Duke of Edinburgh's Expedition section with flying colours late this summer.
On Saturday 19th September, we held our new look, COVID-safe Sixth Form Fair for UV (Year 11) girls and parents. Ms Holloway, Director of Sixth Form, welcomed small groups, spread across the afternoon, to sit well spaced out in Chapel and hear all about the Sixth Form provision at St Mary’s.
Bright and early on the morning of 20th September, eight excited teams of LV (Year 10) girls were treated by Joyce Walters' House staff to bacon and egg butties, before having their kit thoroughly checked by Miss Halpin and then departing by minibus for their 8-9 mile circular walk in the Wiltshire countryside.
On Sunday 13th September, all of the girls enjoyed the first brunch of the term.
As the Bronze Duke of Edinburgh's Award expeditions for last year's LV (Year 10) could not take place in 2020, Mrs Thompson organised a camping skills sleep-out on Saturday night in the school grounds to help those UV (Year 11) girls who want to progress to Silver Expeditions next year.
We are delighted to report that, thanks to the generous support of parents from both St Mary’s and St Margaret’s Schools, as well as grant funding, a new climbing wall has been installed within St Mary’s Calne Sports Club.
On Sunday 6th September, the annual Inter-Company contest 'It's a Knock Out' took place, where girls competed in their year group bubbles.
On the evening of 2nd September, we were delighted to welcome the Sixth Form girls back to school with a special Sixth Form Supper in the upper and lower dining halls, followed by an inspirational lecture by Kate Philp.
One of our 2020 GCSE students, Octavia Sanger, used her initiative and decided to learn a new skill during lockdown - by teaching herself how to make a film. She spent June and July filming a documentary about people's experiences of the COVID-19 pandemic, interviewing 35 people, both adults and children, across the world.
During the summer, Amena Boyd (2020 Leaver) unicycled 108km around Singapore over the course of two days to raise money for the Rainforest Alliance.
In these unprecedented and unsettling times, when so many people around the world have lost loved ones and suffered due to COVID-19, our thoughts at St Mary’s are with all those who have been affected. Our Year 11 girls have faced the unexpected challenges of the times with great resilience and flexibility and we are very proud of them.
