In Chapel on Monday of this week, the English Department recommended some books for the summer break. Mrs Toland shared that, for English teachers, this was a favourite time of year, as they could select books to read during the gloriously long holiday.
Congratulations go to all girls in the UIV (Year 9) who came joint first with the Royal High School, Bath, in the Latin Play Festival hosted by Bristol Grammar School on 28th June.
Over the year, students have been encouraged to learn widely about different people’s experiences throughout History, in both the existing History curriculum - where we have learnt about the Medieval Kingdom of Mali in LIV (Year 7), the slave trade and rebellions in the British Empire in MIV (Year 8) as well as Black Civil Rights in America and the Windrush Generation in UIV (Year 9) - and in competitions to encourage independent engagement with the topic.
The virtual world has opened up lots of opportunities for many of us, not least the ability to hold Debates online between students in different cities - indeed, in different countries! On the evening of Monday 21st June, the UV (Year 11) and LVI (Year 12) had a ‘Desserts and Discussion’ evening in a marquee – outside and socially distanced - to chat and give advice about A Levels and life in Sixth Form.
On Monday 21st June, as part of our Sixth Form Preparation Programme, the UV (Year 11) went to Oxford to explore one of the colleges and the city itself, as well as listen to a talk at Merton about the process of applying to University. I went on the tour around Merton first and I thought the gardens were especially pretty and seemed like good places to work in the summer.
