School Shop Assistant

Part Time, 2 days per week, term time (plus 6 days in Summer holidays)

The School Shop sits at the heart of the campus and plays a vital role in supporting the needs of students and staff.  The shop is one of the first places a St Mary’s girl visits when being fitted for her uniform and is used daily by pupils of both schools for sports equipment, stationery, toiletries, tuck and uniform.  The shop is currently managed by one member of staff who is responsible for all of the above, in addition to the procurement of all school stationery and staff uniform supplies.  There is also another part time School Shop Assistant.

This post is offered on a part time basis (2 days per week 08.00-17.30) during term time and includes occasional Saturday mornings (approximately 1 per month), plus 3 weeks (6 days) holiday work per year (most will be required in the school summer holidays and will be agreed in advance).

The School Shop Assistant will be given full training to to look after all elements of the retail side of the Shop Manager’s role in the Managers absence. Shop Assistants provide support to the Manager during particularly busy periods and special events, such as start of term at both schools, and at St Mary’s New Girls’ Day.

The shop operates an electronic sales system and the successful candidate must be computer literate and able to learn quickly.  St Mary’s girls can purchase items by having them added to their school bill, so accurate record keeping and disbursement of charges is imperative. Students buying things often need help, advice or reassurance with sizing or unfamiliar items. Many pupils who board will look to all school adults (not just teachers) to give them support and some as young as 11 will be living in the UK for the first time, so a kind, sensitive and friendly manner is essential.

Emailing and telephoning staff and parents is an important part of the role, so good, concise communication skills are also needed, as well as a good rapport with both adults and children.

As the successful candidate grows into the role there may be additional responsibility for ordering stock and procuring items for school departments.  Full training will be given, but previous experience of retail, procurement or customer service would certainly be an advantage.

The salary for this position will be FTE £20,081. Based on the part time hours the actual salary will be £7,464.23 per annum.
