Over the past two weeks, the girls of MIV have enjoyed delightful afternoon teas with Ms Dwyer, reflecting on their House achievements while savouring treats served on vintage china, and due to their popularity, more teas are already being planned.
Last month’s Charity Week in aid of Stroke Association was a tremendous success with many pupils and staff participating in the varied and fun line up of events as we returned to school following February Half Term.
The Inter-Company competition and the Leang Cup were fiercely contested this year, following the same format as last year: LIV and MIV teamed up, UIV and LV joined forces, and the senior competition involved UV, LIV, and UIV. With each event contributing points to the overall cup, the competition was wide open until the very end.
Our Sixth Form linguists have enjoyed cultural fun and challenge, starting with a lively tapas dinner and quiz night on Saturday, followed by a virtual international journalism challenge on Monday, where one of our Spanish teams claimed the top prize for content.
The equestrian girls had an action-packed two days competing at Rectory Farm this weekend. All the riders delivered impressive rounds, with many new horse and rider combinations taking part for the first time.
Last Monday evening, the Pound Arts Centre in Corsham hosted an exhilarating performance of Wolves of Willoughby Chase, presented by the Four on Tour Company, which features all of the UIV contributing onstage or back-of-house. The production captivated a full house of parents, staff, students, and school supporters, who were treated to an unforgettable evening of drama, suspense, and shining talent.
The Calne Climbers took part in their first competitive event at the Independent Schools Climbing Championship, tackling challenging boulder problems and top-rope routes at White Spider Climbing Centre. Despite the tough competition, the team showed impressive skill, determination, and teamwork, making their debut a successful and encouraging experience for future competitions.
This term has been an exceptionally successful one in our sporting calendar, with 176 matches and events taking place across a range of sports.
On Thursday 20 March, the LIV Choir, Junior Consort, Chamber Choir, and Chamber Orchestra delivered an exceptional Spring Concert at University Church, Oxford, featuring a diverse programme from traditional choral works to a Guzheng solo, culminating in a moving performance of Pergolesi’s Stabat Mater.
Last Tuesday, we were fortunate to welcome former Calne student Megan Harley-Martin, who returned to lead an insightful revision skills workshop and share an engaging lecture on her current research. Megan completed an undergraduate degree in Philosophy and Theology at Oxford after having left Calne in 2021, and is currently doing a masters in Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies at Oxford.
