The evening of Saturday 22 March saw our Sixth Form linguists enjoy a lovely supper at La Bobina tapas restaurant in Marlborough. The girls were excellent company for each other as they enjoyed a range of typical tapas including pimientos de Padrón and queso Manchego. One of the girls also celebrated her 17th birthday that evening, so it was a very jolly event! A masterful general knowledge quiz was put together by the wonderful team of MFL student Heads of Languages which put the staff through their paces too! Congratulations to the UVI team who won the winning prize with confidence.

On Monday 24 March, LVI French and Spanish pupils gathered in the Florence Dyas common room for a busy morning of international journalism. In this virtual event run by Sally Fagan and team from ‘Business Language Champions’, the pupils were up against linguists from another school. Working to a deadline, they were challenged to produce an eye-catching and informative sample front page for a foreign language newspaper. They were required to write and present an advertising pitch to gain revenue and to present their publication in the target language to a panel of judges.

They benefitted from the opportunity to improve their team skills under pressure, prove their flexibility and above all put their language skills into practice in a modern-day work context. The challenge encompassed all four skills of listening, speaking, writing and reading - it was a very busy three hours! One of the St Mary’s Spanish teams won the overall prize for content and we hope to showcase all of the teams’ work in an MFL Society publication next term - watch this space!
