Chloe Barnes, a Bristol-based printmaker and artist, joined St Mary’s in September as this year’s Artist in Residence.

Chloe specialises in monoprinting, a process which allows her to work intuitively and expressively. Using this technique, she is able to capture the relationship between the emotional and physical states of the human being experience, particularly exploring the subject of female empowerment.

Chloe is currently completing a MA in Multi-Disciplinary Printmaking at the University of the West of England, while working part-time as a designer at Hidden Gallery. Her work features in Pressing Matters magazine, Issue 17, and earlier this month, Chloe exhibited at Woolwich Contemporary Print Fair alongside artists such as Paula Rego and David Shrigley.

Chloe started her residency at St Mary's by investigating Mother and Child, a subject that has appeared throughout the work of Picasso, Matisse, Tracey Emin, and many more. As part of her MA research process, Chloe will spend her residency exploring the story of the Greek Goddess, Persephone. Although it is in the early stages, expect whimsical landscapes, quirky narratives and powerful women.

From Monday 28th November to mid-January, there will be pop-up exhibition of Chloe's work in the Library. So, make sure you swing by to check out a small snippet of what is in store for the year!
