On a dark and frosty Thursday evening, the St Mary’s Calne English Literature A Level students met in Flo’s Bar (FD House) for the first English Society Meeting of the year; the theme was ‘Literary Villains and their Zodiac Signs’.
There were a wide range of costumes from Henry Winter of Donna Tartt’s The Secret History to Big Brother from George Orwell’s 1984. Kenneth Branagh even made an appearance and was deemed a Gemini alongside Dr Victor Frankenstein, and a few others. Some villains were more controversial. Bryony from McEwan’s Atonement sparked debate at one table as some disagreed about what defines a character as a villain, and whether or not Bryony fitted the criteria. Chinese take-away accompanied some spirited conversation followed by the reading of extracts from the chosen characters’ books. Mrs McMahon brought the Christmas spirit with her reading from Charles Dickins’ A Christmas Carol as her chosen literary villain was Scrooge. Dedication to costume was evident, particularly Bram Stoker’s Dracula who had glued fangs to her teeth making it significantly more difficult to eat the food (although she claims it was entirely worth it). The evening was a great success: the perfect end to a term and entry into the holidays.
