On Tuesday 22nd November, the LVI Debate Team, recruited from the weekly Sixth Form Debating Club, achieved an impressive victory in the first round of the English Speaking Union’s Mace debating competition.
The three speakers were Ashleigh B, Deborah A and Beam K. They argued for a ban of digital manipulation of images used in advertising against a team from South Wilts Grammar School. Each speaker had to deliver their section of the argument to the opposing team and audience for seven minutes. In this time they also had to challenge their opponents on aspects of their arguments, manage ‘points of order’ from their opponents and field questions from the audience.
Their meticulous preparation and rehearsals paid off, with their polished performances earning them a place in the next round of the competition. The judge complimented the three speakers on the quality of their arguments and the depth of their research.
The next round of the competition will take place in January 2023. We wish the Debate Team good luck with this next challenge.
