On Tuesday 8th November, the Music Exhibition holders and Music Scholars travelled to Cardiff’s Wales Millenium Centre to watch My Fair Lady. The musical was directed by Barlett Sher, who has also directed other famous plays and musicals such as The King and I and To Kill a Mockingbird, featuring Frederick Lowe’s globally known score with lyrics by Alan Jay Lerner.

My Fair Lady follows pompous phonetics professor Henry Higgins (played by Michael D. Xavier), who is so confident in his skills that he and his sidekick (Colonel Pickering, played by John Middleton) decide to help a cockney working-class flower-seller (Wouldn’t It Be Loverly?) pass for an educated member of high society. His subject ends up being Eliza Doolittle (played by Charlotte Kennedy), who agrees to speech therapy (The Rain in Spain) in order to advance her career as a florist. The pair clash at first, but soon grow to love each other (I Could Have Danced All Night), until Higgins makes a disastrous mistake that will change the course of their friendship forever (I’ve Grown Accustomed to Her Face). The musical also featured other famous actors and singers in key roles, including Adam Woodyatt playing Eliza’s father Alfred P. Doolittle, and the famous soprano Lesley Garrett as Mrs Pearce, the housekeeper of 27a Wimpole Street.

The whole experience was incredible and the stunning performance from Charlotte Kennedy and Michael D. Xavier was the talk of the evening - it's safe to say everyone was awestruck by how good the musical was. Thank you to the Music Department for organising and taking us to such an unforgettable evening!
