Last week, the LV Geographers spent three days exploring interesting geographical features in Dartmoor National Park, Boscastle, Paignton Beach and Bristol. Here, May and Kitty report on the trip:
On the first day, we had a long bus drive to Dartmoor National Park. Here, we discussed the geographical processes and enjoyed the lovely view from Haytor. We then set off to the Runnage Bridge (the upper course of the River Dart) and then Cherrybrooke Bridge (middle course of the River Dart). At these destinations we explored the five hypotheses to discover more about the profiles of a typical river. Our hypotheses included: measuring the width and depth of the river, the velocity, the discharge and exploring the bedload. After the practical work, we went to a delicious steak house where everyone enjoyed lemonade, chips and steak. Afterwards, we had an exciting round of ten pin bowling.
On the second day, we spent the morning at Boscastle studying the traumatic floods in 2004 and how the village had responded to this with various coastal management techniques.
On the way back to the hotel, we stopped at Paignton Beach to study the size of beach sediment and steepness of the beach. We used new equipment we have never seen before and collected data. Later on, we went to the hotel swimming pool, which was very relaxing and followed this by a delicious meal at a tapas restaurant for supper.
On the last day, we drove a long way from Torquay to Bristol with some music in the minibus. In Bristol, we studied the human side of geography, asking people questions about their quality of life in various areas of Bristol. This was an interesting process, as the data collected varied as we continued through the day.
Everyone arrived back at school having really enjoyed this amazing Geography trip - we didn't want it to end!
