This week, a group of LVI literature enthusiasts gathered in the Florence Dyas bar for the Senior Book Club meeting. The focus was Chimamanda Ngozie Adiche’s stunning and topical novel, Americanah, for which Adichie won the 2013 US National Book Critics Circle Award for fiction.
Together, we read extracts and exchanged ideas on Adiche’s exquisite rendering of what is essentially a love story set against a backdrop of post 9/11 America and London, and Nigeria under military rule. What emerges in this sweeping and ambitious novel is a brilliant dissection of race, class and gender on three continents - a perfect complement to the English NEA set texts.
