The Calne community celebrated a term full of fixtures, practice and progress in Chapel last week. An incredible 232 girls represented the school across six sports, participating in a staggering 129 fixtures and events since the start of term. Here’s a snapshot of a very busy term in sport. Congratulations too to girls awarded Sports Colours for hockey. Their names are listed below.
Hockey
Hockey teams have shown immense talent and resilience this term with excellent progress which included:
• The U14s made it to the third round of the English Schools Cup
• The U15s and Senior teams reaching the second round of the plate competition.
Netball
Ahead of next term’s busy programme of fixtures, we had a great start to the netball season, notably:
• The U14 and U16 teams proudly competed at the county championships
• Our U19s finishing 3rd at counties - a testament to excellent teamwork and leadership on court.
Lacrosse
Lacrosse continues to thrive at St Mary’s, with some outstanding results across the board, including:
• The 1st team was runners-up on goal difference in the county competition as well as enjoying competitive matches against Bath and Oxford Brookes Universities
• Our 2nd team won the 2nd team tournament at the Welsh lacrosse rally
Cross Country
You have to be tough to be a cross country competitor and our dedicated runners trained tirelessly in all conditions this term with some excellent performances resulting in six pupils qualifying for next term’s Country Cross Country competition.
Equestrian
Calne’s enthusiastic equestrians have enjoyed team training as well as competing in NSEA Arena Eventing and Showjumping competitions demonstrating remarkable talent and determination. Team Calne is already looking forward to our Annual Arena Eventing School Show at West Wilts on 18 January 2025.
Swimming
The swimming pool has been awash with keen competitors this term, with more than 40 pupils taking part in galas. In recent months Calne swimmers have achieved an outstanding 63 personal best times, 7 school records and many achieved county and regional times. Of particular note was LV’s Florence B’s outstanding swim at British Nationals, placing her 17th in the country for the 100m Freestyle in her age group.
Presenting the round-up of this term’s sport in Chapel last week, Freya in UVI said, ‘These achievements don’t happen without effort. Behind every match or competition are the hours of training, and the moments of triumph and disappointment that shape us as athletes and as individuals. What stands out the most is the sense of unity and support within our sporting community. Whether on the pitch, the court, or the sidelines, the encouragement for one another has been the foundation of our success. As we head into a well-deserved break, I hope we can all take pride in what we have accomplished - the lessons learned through sport – perseverance, resilience, and teamwork – will serve us far beyond the games we play.’
Well done to the following girls awarded Sports Colours in hockey this term in recognition of their exceptional commitment, skill, and leadership. Colours were awarded by hockey coaches to Juniors, Inters and Seniors this term.
