This week, we were lucky enough to welcome historian Jesse Childs, author of Gods Traitor and Henry VIIs Last Victim, who captivated us about the lesser known details of the Gunpowder Plot, on its anniversary almost 400 years later!
A few of us were able to have supper with Jesse beforehand, where we discussed her other books and favourite historical TV shows. During the lecture, we explored what might have happened had the Gunpowder Plot succeeded and delved into the deep-rooted animosity between Catholics and Protestants that fuelled the conspiracy. It was interesting to hear about the other people involved, not just Guy Fawkes, and those affected by the aftermath, such as the murders of Catholic Priests and the women prosecuted for possible involvement. We learned many gruesome facts, about cruel punishment of the plotters to be hanged, drawn and quartered!
We also briefly explored how Bonfire Night is celebrated in modern times, and its significance even in today's world. Jesse reinforced its importance by showing photos of celebration in the town of Lewes, in which they burn effugies of hated figures from the years, including Donald Trump and Boris Johnson! Whilst giving her talk we could hear the fireworks from local displays which only added to the interest of the talk.
Overall, we all thoroughly enjoyed learning about the unknown factors within the Gunpowder plot and how religion played a huge part in inspiring the plotters.
