As part of our Futures Programme for the LVI on Saturday mornings, the students took part in two sessions covering introductions to both car and bike maintenance. These are essential life skills to ensure that they are aware of how to carry out safety checks on a vehicle including tyre pressure, tread depth and that all lights are functioning properly. They were given additional challenges of checking oil levels, identifying the dates for a service and MOT, along with trying to fit a child seat.
Alongside this challenge they also were faced with fixing a mountain bike that had been broken down into parts and had received a punctured inner tube. The students had to work out how to align the wheels with the handlebars, adjust the rear derailleur, replace an inner tube and re-assemble the key parts of the bike.
All of these tasks allowed the students to practise and develop their knowledge of basic maintenance that they may require in the future.
