On Saturday 8 March, we were fortunate to attend the Kingswood BISMUN 2025 conference in Bath, which was entirely student-led. Model United Nations (MUN) is an educational simulation where students role-play as diplomats, representing countries in various committees that mirror real-world UN councils. Delegates collaborate to discuss and solve global issues, working through resolutions, debates, and negotiations.
Having spent the past five months preparing under the guidance of Dr Wickson, we had submitted individual resolutions addressing various global issues related to our assigned delegations—Oman, Australia, and Costa Rica—and committees. These included the Environment, Political, Historical 1994, Human Rights, and Science and Technology committees.
On the first day, we focused on the issues outlined in our resolutions, where delegates had the opportunity to voice their opinions and engage in debate within their committees. We voted on resolutions, made amendments, and immersed ourselves in a space filled with diverse perspectives and judgments.
The second day introduced ‘Emergency Problems’ that required quick, cooperative solutions. Through forming alliances with delegates from various countries, all committees were able to address these crises effectively, concluding their discussions in a productive and cohesive manner. The conference culminated with a General Assembly session and a prize-giving ceremony.
This experience equipped us with a wide range of valuable skills, including debating, public speaking, and a greater appreciation for global humanitarian issues from multiple perspectives.
Overall, attending the Kingswood BISMUN 2025 conference was an incredible experience. We are grateful to have participated and would highly recommend it to anyone interested in international relations and diplomacy.
