On the afternoon of Friday 9 May, the whole of LIV made their annual visit, some might say pilgrimage, to the International Meditation Centre at Heddington village, just a short journey away from St Mary’s. We were once again warmly welcomed by the Centre which teaches Therevada Buddhism meditation techniques and attracts many Buddhists from around the world to their courses and retreats, which run throughout the year. The girls’ Religious Studies lessons on Buddhism were consolidated and their knowledge of this fascinating faith was further extended as they listened to their teacher, who once again was Mr Roy Millman, father of Mia, a former pupil at St Mary’s. This year’s cohort were very keen both to answer and ask questions.

Following this all girls took the opportunity to engage in meditative breathing exercises in the Dhamma hall. I was impressed at their focus and excellent concentration skills. They next visited the beautifully decorated golden-roofed pagoda, set in the centre’s immaculate gardens, complete with bells tinkling in the breeze. Due to the lovely sunny and warm weather, we were able to enjoy the spectacularly beautiful gardens.

We were delighted to be served a gorgeous tea of home-baked cakes, bread and jam, complete with elderflower cordial. The girls enjoyed themselves hugely, were an immense credit to the school and departed a great deal more relaxed than they had arrived, as did the four members of staff who had accompanied them!
