As the UK celebrates Volunteers’ Week (2nd – 8th June), we’re shining a spotlight on our incredible students who give their time and talents to support our local community – and we could not be more proud of their efforts and enthusiasm in this area.

Each week, our pupils in the Sixth Form step beyond the school gates to share positivity and make a real impact. Whether it’s helping with reading and dance clubs in primary schools, supporting the local Rainbows, Brownies or Guides units, or spending time with residents in elderly care homes, their commitment to others is truly inspiring.

'I originally started doing this volunteering as part of the Sixth Form programme and because I was doing my Gold Duke of Edinburgh, however, I had to stop DofE due to an injury last year but I decided to continue teaching the girls because it’s so much fun and I feel that we all get something great out of it!' LM

Others volunteer at community hospitals, offering a listening ear, a helping hand, and a reassuring presence. Their work brings joy, comfort, and connection to so many – and it speaks volumes about the kind of young people they are.

'My volunteering has been so interesting, and I have learnt a huge amount about the NHS and how a hospital runs on a day-to-day basis. I have also met so many amazing people, both the patients and the doctors. It has definitely been challenging at times, particularly learning how to cope with patients who are really struggling emotionally and physically, but overall, it is really rewarding. My volunteering has really helped to keep me motivated through my A Levels.' JB

Volunteering helps our students grow in confidence, empathy and leadership, whilst making a positive difference in the lives of those around them. It’s a vital part of life at St Mary’s as we recognise the  mutual benefits of working in partnership with the local schools and community organisations. We are grateful to partnership schools and organisations who offer our pupils this invaluable opportunity outside of their own school.

'During Volunteers’ Week, I want to say a heartfelt thank you to everyone at St Mary’s who gives their time to volunteer — staff, pupils, and especially our incredible LVI student volunteers. Your kindness, energy, and dedication truly embody the spirit of community. We are stronger together, and I’m so proud of all you do.' Mrs Claire Bolton, Head of Community Outreach and Partnerships.
