On Wednesday 7 May, LIV and MIV were treated to a demonstration of an exciting range of musical instruments, brought to us by Miss Thomas, Mr Allard, Mr Joyce, Mr Parker, Mrs Elphick, Mr Walsh, and several current instrumental students. Ranging from the bassoon to the electric guitar, the viola to the double bass, and the trombone to drums and percussion; these wonderful instruments make up the Minority Instrument Scheme (also known as MINIs) options for 2025. (Full list of instruments below.)
To encourage students to explore the diversity these instruments bring to the musical landscape, St Mary’s offers a generous two-term free trial of weekly lessons with specialist music teachers. Each of the students has access to a QR Code, enabling them to apply to be part of the Minority Instrument Scheme, choosing up to three preferences of instrument. If their application is successful, they will be allocated lessons on one of their chosen instruments, with lessons running during the Autumn and Spring Terms 2025/6. At the end of the trial, they can choose to continue with paid lessons if they would like to.
Learning a musical instrument continues to be one of the most rewarding extra-curricular activities. Scientifically proven to help develop the brain and cognitive ability, as musicians play with various ensembles, they become excellent listeners, problem solvers, and sensitive to their surroundings and environment. It also provides for a fun and social activity, making new friends with other passionate musicians.
Deadline for students to apply: Monday 19 May 2025.
Instruments available: Viola, Double Bass, Oboe, Clarinet, Bassoon, Organ, all Brass, Harp, Guitar, Drums & Percussion.
