On Wednesday 7th June, the LVI chemists visited the fascinating spectroscopy labs at the University of Bath. Firstly, they were divided into small groups and visited three different labs to see how samples of aspirin could be analysed.
On Monday 5th June, our Fourth Form were fortunate to be joined by Henry Hudson from People Change Minds. Henry delivered a fantastic workshop on the topic of LGBTQ+ diversity and creating safe spaces for people to be open about their identity and feelings.
Over the Half Term, St Mary's was delighted to host a most joyous occasion - a wonderful wedding! Congratulations to Dr Daisy Gibbs, our Head of Academic Music, on her marriage to Peter, which took place in the Chapel and was officiated by our own school chaplain, Rev. Jonathan Beach.
Congratulations to our Swimming Coach, Mrs Nikki Harris, for setting the new British Record for the 50m Freestyle, in her age group, last week at the British Masters Championships!
Before Half Term, Georgia (LIV, Year 7) represented St Mary’s Calne at the South West Regional Finals of the English Speaking Union’s ‘Performing Shakespeare’ competition, which was held at Taunton School.
Sixth Formers from St Mary’s, and local school, Hardenhuish, have developed their interview and critical thinking skills in a series of workshops with our own Dr Wickson, in addition to working with the Roche Court Educational Trust, on this unique collaborative project.
In June, the Primary School Lacrosse Festival will welcome around 100 girls and boys in Years 5 and 6 from local primary schools to St Mary’s to participate in lacrosse activities, many for the very first time. To get ready for the Lacrosse Festival, Mr Abini, Head of Lacrosse, offered to lead some taster sessions at primary schools, with the first session happening this week at Cherhill Primary School.
Our short story winners are now published authors! On Thursday 25th May, Sophie O (MIV) went to Daunt Books in London for the launch of the Daunt Books Children's Short Story Competition 'Anthology' which features stories by Sophie, Beatrice C (UV) and Bella (UV).
We were all delighted to see recent Alumnae (2022, 2021 Leavers) who had recently completed their Duke of Edinburgh’s Gold Award as guests of honour at a Garden Party in the Buckingham Palace Garden held to celebrate their achievement. The celebration saw The Duke of Edinburgh congratulate attendees in a speech from the Palace’s West Terrace.
For our Environment Chapel this week, we focused on the impact our waste has on the environment, particularly within school, and launched the new Eco-Group. The Eco-Group will be led by Annabel and Thea (Year 11, LVI) and aims to get people across all year groups involved in reducing waste and other eco-intiatives.
On Friday 19th May, the Religious Studies Department took the LIV girls on the annual trip to the International Meditation Centre in Heddington, just a few minutes' drive away in the Wiltshire countryside.
On Thursday 18th May, on one of the first warm evenings of early summer, we hosted the 150th Anniversary Garden Party in the verdant surroundings of the Lime Kiln Garden. Over 100 alumnae, former parents and friends enjoyed drinks and delicious canapés in the garden and pavilion whilst listening to a medley of uplifting musical performances from several of our students.
